The Book of Kings Retold — an audio book. Part I: “The Heroic Vow”, from the opening chapter of the Shahnameh to Sohrab’s Lament.

The Shahnameh, or “Book of Kings”, is one of the most voluminous epics in all of world literature, running to 50,000 rhyming couplets. The poet narrates the history of the ancient Persian kings, from mythology to the Arab conquest in 651 AD. It was completed around 1010 AD by Ferdowsi (935–1020). We have tried to bring Ferdowsi’s monumental work to the attention of Persian speakers today, and to guide them through the obstacles of its language in approaching the fathomless depths of the most pivotal work in all Persian literature.
